Meaning of Sankofa

Sankofa, an African word originating from the Akan tribe in Ghana holds profound meaning. Its literal translation, “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind,” conveys the idea that we are not only allowed but encouraged to reflect on the past and bring its wisdom with us. By embracing this saying, we understand the importance of delving into our history to gain a profound appreciation for our culture and traditions. Through this introspection, we can pave the way for a brighter future for ourselves and future generations.

Knowing our history and heritage is integral to understanding our present selves and the world around us. It empowers us to make positive progress and shape a better future. Sankofa serves as a reminder that our past shapes our identity, and without recognizing and comprehending it, we cannot move forward. As members of the African community, we are encouraged to honor and celebrate our past, which forms an indelible part of our collective identity. We can draw upon this knowledge to guide our path forward and foster the flourishing of the entire African community.

Therefore, in this prestigious award ceremony, we come together to acknowledge and celebrate our rich heritage and culture. We also pay tribute to those individuals who contribute to the growth and development of our community. By doing so, we unite as a community, looking ahead with determination and dedication to construct a brighter future for all.
